The brief

Liz Stacpoole, founder of Star Counselling, is a qualified therapist who offers counselling and psychotherapy services to adults and teenagers – both in her private practice and in the NHS.Liz approached us to redesign her existing website, bearing the following points in mind:

  • Bring a more personal, welcoming and supportive feel to Star Counselling’s site
  • Reflect the professional and therapeutic relationship that exists between counsellor and client
  • Ensure that potential clients feel at ease as they search for information

Starting with SEO

We knew that Search Engine Optimisation would be an important tool to use in order for Liz’s website to show up on Google’s results page – and to climb high! So we researched relevant keywords in order to pin down the two top search terms, all with the aim of gaining great results for Star Counselling and helping them appear higher in people's search results. Next, we added these terms throughout the content, title tags and metadata.

The design process

We created a safe and welcoming space on the website, using a neutral colour palette for a soft tone and imagery that promotes a sense of calmness, of inspiring change. We built on this warm, aspirational mood by applying artwork to the colour tone of photography throughout the site.

As Liz needed to include a lot of content, we structured it in a way that’s still clear and accessible to potential clients. We presented key content on the homepage (linked out to further info) in a way that doesn’t feel overwhelming. We also used a “click to scroll” navigation and a “scroll to top” button for a great user experience on every device.

Finally, we spread clicks from the content page to the rest of the site by popping a contact section on each page – making it even easier for people to get in touch when they need to.

The result

Star Counselling’s website is now a safe, welcoming space that’s easy to navigate and that promotes positive change. Our SEO work paid off, too – it now occupies 1st and 2nd positions for both specific search terms on Google.
